COOKIES

Definition of cookies
Cookies are small data files containing letters and numbers that enable the web server to store information on the client (the browser) which can be used during browsing of the site (session cookies) or even afterwards, at a later date (persistent cookies). Cookies are stored by the individual browser on the specific device used for browsing (computer, tablet, smartphone) on the basis of the settings of the browser used. Similar technologies (controllable GIFs, web beacons, and HTML5 local storage components, etc.) can be used to collect information on user behaviour and the use of the services.

Types of cookies (the following definitions contain citations from the website of the Italian Data Protection Authority)

Technical cookies are those used for the sole purpose of “carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide this service”.They are not used for any other purpose and are usually installed directly by the website owner or manager. They may be subdivided into browser and session cookies which guarantee normal browsing and use of the website (making it possible, for example, to make a purchase or sign in before accessing reserved areas); analytics cookies, incorporated in the technical cookies used directly by the website manager to collect information, in an aggregate form, on the number of users and how said users visit the website; functional cookies, which allow the user to browse based on a number of selected criteria (e.g. language, products selected for purchase) in order to enhance the service provided for each user. Therefore, prior user consent is not required for the installation of these cookies.

b. Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies aim to create profiles relative to the user and are used for the purpose of sending advertising messages in line with the preferences shown by the user when browsing on-line. Due to the particularly invasive nature which such devices may have within the user’s private sphere, EU and Italian regulations stipulate that the user must be adequately informed on their use and express, therefore, his/her valid consent.

c. Third party cookies

So-called “third party” cookies are used during browsing of the website for user profiling purposes but have been installed by other sites previously browsed, even quite some time ago. Their purpose is to customise the user’s browsing experience by presenting advertising messages in line with preferences expressed during previous internet searches, and to draw up marketing statistics on the tastes and preferences of the users of the website.
